Nobel Smile ?
Can Nobel Biocare finally smile again? Last week Sweden's Medical Products Agency (MPA) gave Nobel the green light to continue selling its NobelDirect and NobelPerfect implants. The condition is simply that Nobel Biocare must rewrite instructions for the NobelDirect and NobelPerfect dental implants to inform customers and dentists of a possible bone loss problem and how to prevent it, the Swedish Medical Products Agency said. The company must explain by Jan. 8, 2007 how it plans to rewrite the instructions and cannot market the product until the new information is available.

Insurance Coverage for Dental Implants

Delta Dental of Michigan, Ohio and Indiana (Delta
Dental) will begin covering dental implants as part of its standard
benefits beginning January 1, 2007. That means enrollees will have the
option of choosing an implant to replace a missing tooth instead of a
conventional fixed bridge.

FDA Comments on Human Tissue Risks
For the second time in a year, people who received tendons, cartilage and other parts from donated cadavers are being urged to get tested for hepatitis and the AIDS virus because of scandals involving tissue suppliers. Cadaver tissue is used for everything from back surgery to dental implant surgery.

BioHorizons Gets Acquired
Last week, HealthpointCapital, LLC (“HealthpointCapital”) announced the purchase of BioHorizons Implant Systems, Inc. (“BioHorizons” or “Company”). BioHorizons designs, produces and distributes oral reconstructive devices including dental implants and tissue regeneration products. BioHorizons, located in Birmingham, Alabama, is one of the fastest-growing companies in the dental industry. Terms of the transaction were not disclosed.
